The poignant videos making waves online today are all about second chances.
When Duffy, a rescued Irish terrier, went blind, his caregiver Benjamin May claimed that he and his parents (Duffy's owners) were heartbroken. May points out that Duffy's downfall appears to have happened quickly.
“He went from a normal 8-year-old dog to a completely blind dog in about 3-5 months,” May posted on Reddit.
Duffy, 9, suffers from canine diabetes, which is very similar to human diabetes in that his body cannot properly manufacture insulin, making it difficult for the body to digest sugar. This disease has no known cure.
Daffy's owners initially thought he had diabetes last year when he began urinating frequently in the house, one clear indicator of the sometimes debilitating condition.
Doctors verified the worst: Tamiflu's blood sugar was dangerously high. Duffy went blind shortly after her diagnosis and would never be able to see her loved ones again.
But his loving family and experienced veterinarians were adamant about keeping the beautiful Irish Terrier. Duffy's family faithfully administered the medication and closely monitored Tamiflu's blood sugar levels until veterinarians agreed to perform surgical treatment to restore Duffy's eyesight.
May added: “Fortunately, we kept his statistics stable, and the doctors agreed to perform the surgery.”
Duffy underwent surgery in January last year, and everything went well. His family took pains to film the moment Davey's vet removed his bandages and allowed him to see his loved ones again. Daffy was thrilled to wag his tail to meet Mom and Dad, and his eyes were better, though not as new.
May expressed his pride in seeing how much Duffy has progressed since the surgery.
"He obviously still has diabetes, so he gets insulin injections twice a day, but the surgery to repair his eye was completely successful, and there were no difficulties or concerns about his vision," May told The Huffington Post.
