Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) rescuers picked up two dogs who were found running together in busy Oklahoma City last month.
It is not uncommon for SAW welfare officers to rescue several dogs at once, but they are accustomed to seeing rescued enslaved street pups become increasingly self-sufficient.
The crew could immediately tell that these two had a special relationship in this situation.
“They traveled who knows how far, but they always stayed together,” Ashley Jerks, an animal care officer at SAW, told The Dodo.
The band received the couple with warm arms and gave them the names Bonnie and Clyde. They refused to leave each other even in the shelter.
“They served in the same kennel together, where they seemed very close,” Jerks told me.
The two dogs cuddled together for the next three days as they decompressed and received medical care. Despite their ongoing struggle with heartworm, Bonnie and Clyde eventually gained enough strength to consider being adopted.
When they were briefly separated on the adoption floor, the two best friends couldn't wait to see each other again.
“When we gave them time outside, they would run together,” Jerks told me.
Soon after, Bonnie found herself alone in the shelter while Clyde was adopted by a loving family.
The sad girl immediately missed her best friend, and began to lose hope of her happily ever after.
A welfare officer took a photo of her lying on her bed one day and posted it on the shelter's social media in hopes of finding a family for her.
"Bonnie has been lonely since her brother was adopted, and she definitely misses having a sibling to hold," she wrote on Facebook.
Fortunately, their dream was realized sooner than planned.
“This was posted on Friday, and someone was the first to adopt it on Monday,” Jerks went on to say.
Bonnie has finally found the home of her dreams, and she couldn't be happier.
“It's already settling in!” Brayden Roth, Bonnie's new mother, wrote in a comment on Facebook. "She's going to have the best life, full of adventures with her blue high-heeled big sister."
Bonnie was adopted only a few days ago, but her new family treats her as if she's been with them forever.
While Bonnie will always remember her brother Clyde fondly, she is thrilled by the adventures that lie ahead.
