One of the reasons we love our dogs is that they comfort us when we feel sick or when we feel depressed. They somehow know that we feel sad and sick, so they stay by our side and try to console us. But it's not just humans that know how to comfort dogs, dogs also comfort each other in times of need.
We've proven this time and time again when we see stories of loyal dogs who stay by their injured friend's side. We have seen dogs that refuse to leave their companion who has been hurt or even those who have already died. In the story below, a sick dog comforts another dog who is also going through a difficult ordeal.
These two dogs, Simone and Sammy, were rescued from two different shelters in South Carolina. They are now with the good people at Rescue Dogs Rock NYC – a non-profit volunteer rescue organization.
Simon, a one-year-old Border Collie suffers from a horrific case of mange - a skin disease caused by mites. Poor Simon was in a terrible state when he was dropped off at the shelter as a stray. He was feverish, crying and shaking. He was starving and his body had open, infected wounds.
Sammy, on the other hand, is a 3-4 month old Boxer puppy who has been severely abused. Sammy was sprayed with bullets, shot in the head, and dragged behind the car. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC described Sammy's condition on Instagram: “Sammy has the bullet hole in his head which you can see in the photo. His skin has been extensively torn and cut from being dragged behind a car and we're told the bones in at least one of his back legs are shattered.”
Simon, although reeling from his ordeal, goes to Sami to comfort him. The two have a very special bond. Their bond continues to grow. Thanks to the efforts of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, the two got the treatment they desperately needed. Simon has improved and we can see how much his condition has improved. Sami is still in critical condition, but Simon is there to protect and monitor him.
